CAUSA E CONSEQUÊNCIA

because – porque, pois (indica a razão de algo)

She stayed home because she was sick.
(Ela ficou em casa porque estava doente.)
We cancelled the trip because it was raining.
(Cancelamos a viagem porque estava chovendo.)

since – já que, uma vez que (indica causa conhecida)

Since you are here, let's start the meeting.
(Já que você está aqui, vamos começar a reunião.)
Since it’s late, we should go home.
(Já que está tarde, deveríamos ir para casa.)

due to – devido a (mais formal; seguido geralmente de substantivo)

The flight was delayed due to bad weather.
(O voo foi atrasado devido ao mau tempo.)
The cancellation was due to a lack of participants.
(O cancelamento foi devido à falta de participantes.)

therefore – portanto, por isso (introduz uma consequência)

It was raining; therefore, the match was postponed.
(Estava chovendo; portanto, o jogo foi adiado.)
She studied hard; therefore, she passed the exam.
(Ela estudou muito; portanto, passou no exame.)

as a result – como resultado (introduz um efeito ou consequência)

He didn’t study; as a result, he failed the test.
(Ele não estudou; como resultado, ele reprovou na prova.)
The company expanded; as a result, profits increased.
(A empresa expandiu; como resultado, os lucros aumentaram.)

CONTRASTE

although – embora (introduz uma ideia oposta)

Although it was raining, we went hiking.
(Embora estivesse chovendo, fomos fazer trilha.)
She looks happy although she is worried inside.
(Ela parece feliz embora esteja preocupada por dentro.)

even though – mesmo que, apesar de (forma mais forte de "although")

Even though he was tired, he kept working.
(Mesmo que ele estivesse cansado, continuou trabalhando.)

(Mesmo que seja caro, eu vou comprar.)

whereas – enquanto que (contrasta duas ideias)

I like tea, whereas my brother prefers coffee.
(Eu gosto de chá, enquanto que meu irmão prefere café.)
She is very outgoing, whereas her sister is shy.
(Ela é muito extrovertida, enquanto que sua irmã é tímida.)

while – enquanto, apesar de (pode contrastar ideias ou indicar tempo)

(Embora eu ame doces, tento não comer muito.)
He reads a book while waiting for the bus.
(Ele lê um livro enquanto espera o ônibus.)

however – no entanto, entretanto (introduz contraste forte entre ideias)

I wanted to go; however, I was too tired.
(Eu queria ir; no entanto, estava muito cansado.)
It’s expensive; however, it’s worth it.
(É caro; no entanto, vale a pena.)

nevertheless – mesmo assim, apesar disso (similar a "however")

It was raining; nevertheless, we played outside.
(Estava chovendo; mesmo assim, brincamos lá fora.)
He was injured; nevertheless, he finished the race.
(Ele estava machucado; mesmo assim, terminou a corrida.)

ADIÇÃO

furthermore – além disso (introduz uma informação extra)

She is smart; furthermore, she is very hardworking.
(Ela é inteligente; além disso, é muito trabalhadora.)
The project is expensive; furthermore, it’s risky.
(O projeto é caro; além disso, é arriscado.)

in addition to – além de (seguido geralmente de substantivo ou verbo)

In addition to English, she speaks Spanish.
(Além de inglês, ela fala espanhol.)
In addition to studying, he works full-time.
(Além de estudar, ele trabalha em tempo integral.)

as well as – assim como (expressa adição de forma elegante)

She sings as well as plays the guitar.
(Ela canta assim como toca violão.)
He is respected as well as loved by his students.
(Ele é respeitado assim como amado por seus alunos.)

FINALIDADE E RESULTADO

so that – para que (indica finalidade)

I will explain it clearly so that everyone understands.
(Vou explicar claramente para que todos entendam.)

(Ele saiu cedo para que pudesse pegar o trem.)

in order to – para (indicar intenção ou propósito)

She studies hard in order to pass the exam.

(Ele treinou todos os dias para vencer a competição.)

so...that – tão... que (indica resultado)

She was so tired that she fell asleep immediately.
(Ela estava tão cansada que adormeceu imediatamente.)
It was so cold that the lake froze.
(Estava tão frio que o lago congelou.)

CONDIÇÃO

unless – a menos que (condição negativa)

I won't go unless you come with me.
(Eu não vou a menos que você vá comigo.)
You won't pass unless you study hard.
(Você não vai passar a menos que estude muito.)

in case – caso, se (precaução)

Take an umbrella in case it rains.
(Leve um guarda-chuva caso chova.)
Bring some money in case we need it.
(Traga um pouco de dinheiro caso precisemos.)

as long as – contanto que (condição positiva)

You can borrow my car as long as you drive carefully.
(Você pode pegar meu carro contanto que dirija com cuidado.)
I'll help you as long as you tell me the truth.
(Vou te ajudar contanto que me diga a verdade.)

provided that – desde que, contanto que (mais formal que "as long as")

You can stay out late provided that you call me.
(Você pode ficar fora até tarde desde que me ligue.)
We will approve your application provided that all documents are correct.
(Aprovaremos sua inscrição desde que todos os documentos estejam corretos.)
